I. Vehicle bans per the Austrian Law on Air Pollution (IG-L) in Tyrol

1) Night ban for heavy goods vehicles (Directive of the State Governor dated 2010-10-27, LGBl. No. 64/2010, most recently amended by Directive LGBl. No. 129/2015).

On a section of the A12 Inntalautobahn highway (Kufstein - Zirl in both directions), HGVs with maximum permissible weights over 7.5 t are

  • prohibited from 05-01 to 10-31 from 10:00 p.m. to 05:00 a.m. and on Sundays and legal holidays from 11:00 p.m. to 05:00 a.m. and
  • from 11-01 to 04-30 from 08:00 p.m. to 05:00 a.m. as well as on Sundays and legal holidays from 11:00 p.m. to 05:00 a.m.

Vehicles in Euroclass VI are not covered by the ban, provided the Euroclass is proven via labelling of the vehicle or alternatively by a document carried in the vehicle during a transition period (see Point II.).

2) Vehicle bans for high-pollution heavy vehicles (Directive of the State Governor dated 2016-05-18, LGBl. No. 43/2016)

The Euroclass vehicle bans apply on a section of the A12 Inntalautobahn highway between Kufstein and Zirl in both directions. The vehicle ban currently covers heavy goods vehicles with maximum permissible weights of over 7.5 t in Euroclass 0, I, II.

However, even heavy vehicles in the permitted Euroclasses III, IV, V and VI may only use the ban section if classification in the corresponding Euroclass is proven either by labelling or – during a transition period – via a document carried in the vehicle (see Point II.).

3) Sectional vehicle ban (Directive of the State Governor dated 2016-05-18, LGBl. No. 44/2016, most recently amended by Directive LGBl. No. 115/2016)

Since 2016-11-01, transport of specific goods with heavy vehicles is prohibited on a section of the A12 Inntalautobahn highway (Kufstein – Innsbruck/Ampass).
Among other things, the sectional driving ban also includes a general exception for transport by heavy goods vehicles in Emission Class Euro VI and until 2017-04-30 also Emission Class Euro V, whereby classification in these Euroclasses must be proven by labelling or via a document carried in the vehicle, during a transition period.

II. Labelling obligation for heavy goods vehicles from 2017-05-01

From May 2017 on, proof of the permitted Euroclass can only be provided via labelling in accordance with the IG-L exhaust emission class labelling regulation. As of that point, other proofs will no longer be sufficient.

From 2017-05-01 on, all Euroclass III, IV, V, and VI heavy goods vehicles used within the IG-L driving ban areas must therefore be labelled with an exhaust emission badge in accordance with the IG-L exhaust emission classes labelling directive.

The exhaust emission badges can only be issued by authorized bodies.

Vehicles are classified based on suitable documents submitted (e.g. type certificate, individual approval or data excerpt from the approval database). The badge shown costs EUR 2.50 (incl. VAT) plus the costs for classification in the exhaust emission class and attachment to the vehicle by an authorized party. As a result, we recommend that you inquire about the costs in advance.

  • As labelling is obligatory from 2017-05-01, we recommend that you obtain the respective badge in good time. The HGVs in question generally do not have to be presented for inspection. It is enough to submit the corresponding documents (registration document, type certificate, COP document, CEMT approval – the pollutant emissions must be clearly documented) to the authorized body and apply for the exhaust emission badge.
  • Ensure that the right badge is attached to the right HGV (the punch dates must match the registration dates).
  • Driving without an exhaust emission badge is an administrative offence and subject to fines of up to 2,180 Euros.
  • Foreign environmental badges are not recognized due to the different legal situation in Austria.
  • continuously updated list of authorized issuing bodies for the environmental badge for HGVs is available from the Chamber of Commerce Transport and Traffic trade group or from the Guild of Motor Vehicle Technicians.
