Data Act: European data protection watchdogs call for additional safeguards to protect privacy
On 5 May, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) published their Joint Opinion on the Data Act. In the document, the EDPS and EDPB support clear guidelines for the use of relevant data for purposes of direct marketing or advertising. They also stressed that additional safeguards were necessary to protect the fundamental right to privacy and data protection; and cautioned that the oversight mechanism outlined in the proposal may lead to fragmented supervision.
DIGITAL
EP CULT and EMPL opinion on the Path to the Digital Decade
On May 2, the EP CULT Committee published its opinion on the Path to the Digital Decade proposal. This Policy Programme aims to ensure that the EU achieves its goals of creating a digital transformation of the European economy by 2030. In the opinion, CULT MEPs highlight that education and training are key to digital transformation and suggest some amendments to clarify provisions related to digital skills.
On May 3, the EP Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) also published its opinion on the proposal. EMPL MEPs argue that the programme must push towards equal chances for all and upgrade skills to align with the labour market’s demand.
MEDIA
EU institutions stand up for media freedom and pluralism
On May 3, EU institutions issued declarations in support of media freedom and the safety of journalists. The EP held a plenary debate with the EC where MEPs agreed on the importance of press freedom and welcomed the Anti-SLAPP Directive, which provides journalists with tools to fight back against abusive court proceedings.
The Commission's Recommendation on the safety of journalists is also establishing actions and measures to ensure their safety online. In addition, the Media Freedom Act will create safeguards to protect media pluralism and the editorial independence of the media.
