Beijing, formerly known as Peking, is the capital of the People’s Republic of China, and the country’s political, cultural, international exchange as well as scientific and technological innovation center. Beijing is home to the headquarters of most of the state-owned enterprises and houses the largest number of Fortune Global 500 companies in the country. The tertiary industry or service sector accounted for more than 80 % of the city’s GDP, while the secondary industry or industrial and manufacturing sector accounted for most of the remaining 20 %.

Beijing has highly developed financial, service, R&D, cultural, and education industries.  In 2019, the added value of new economy reached 1.276.58 billion RMB, up by 7,5 % over the previous year at current price, which accounted for 36,1 % of the GDP of Beijing, up by 0.2 percentage points over the previous year. The added value of high-tech industry reached 863 billion RMB, with a growth of 7,9 % over the previous year at current price, which accounted for 24,4 % of the GDP.

Completed investment in fixed assets in high-tech manufacturing industry in Beijing increased by 3,9 %, accounting for 54,0 % of the investment in manufacturing, up by 1,6 percentage points over the previous year. Service consumption contributed 72,7 % to the total consumption growth; of which, the consumption of household goods and services, healthcare, education, culture and entertainment grew rapidly.

Foreign investment has maintained steady growth. In 2019, Beijing saw 1.636 foreign-invested enterprises, and utilized foreign capital 14,21 billion $, accounting for 10 % of the country’s total.
